Sancte Spiritus

This poem relates to my baptism in the Holy Spirit back in October 1977. I had no idea that such an event would take place and had never even heard of such a thing until then. It is something that will remain with me throughout the remainder of my earthly life and after that, in Paradise. This baptism, it must be noted, is open to anyone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Saviour, having repented of past sin and who will follow Jesus in faith and trust each day.

The evening service ended, down the road
To a young people’s meeting who would meet
Each Sunday evening, a fellowship
Of praise and prayer, a happy gathering.

All were absorbed by what was spoken of,
How anyone could be immersed into
The power of the Holy Spirit, who
Would transform lives by His presence within.

The meeting carried on, my mind transfixed
By such a notion of the Spirit’s power
Which can and does transform one’s inner life
As God makes dwelling in one’s open heart.

Now drawing to a close, people prepared
To leave and go their separate ways home.
But something stirred within to beckon me
To stay, to receive Him within my heart.

That is, to receive Him in a new way,
A way never before experienced
A baptism of blessing showering down
Into the inner depths of my being.

The minister, with prayer and holy hands
Invoked the Holy Spirit in that place
To enter in afresh, the heavenly tongue,
Celestial language making heartfelt plea.

It was as if the heavens had opened
To pour down blessing from above into
This open heart and mind, a powerful
Transforming presence to make all things new.

Oh how to tell how great this blessing was,
It was so vast yet gentle as the dove
That fell upon the blessed Lamb of God
A vision pure and bright; affirming love.

The time to leave had come, a blissful walk
Unto my dwelling place, yet sleep came not
Until gone midnight, my heart full of joy
And praise unto the blessed Three in One.

Life carried on, with all its joys and woes
But yet the Spirit stirs within me still,
Seek Him with all your heart and let Him in
That yours may be that powerful indwelling.
