8. Emmaus (v)

The two companions with the Lamb of God

Approached the village they had set out for

And made haste to arrive at their dwelling.

But Jesus sought as if to carry on

The road that they had travelled on. The two

Urged him with strength of word to stay awhile:

“Rabbi, the day is almost gone and soon

The evening will be here soon, we implore

You stay with us. We will prepare a meal

For us three, you may stay as long as you

May wish to. Stay with us, and be our guest.”

The Lamb of God accepted their request

To stay with them, a meal they did prepare.

He took the bread and to Yahweh gave thanks

And broke it and to each He gave a share.

As scales that fall from those who blinded are

They fell, and opened were their eyes and minds

To who it was who taught them on the road

About the prophecies concerning Him

Who for the salvation of humankind

Did undergo the cross and all its shame

And resurrected was from the dark tomb

Into eternal life in Paradise

From whence He came, His Godhead now restored.

The two companions had barely turned

To face the Lamb of God, who from their sight

Had vanished from their midst. Then they did ask

Each to the other: “Did not our hearts burn

Within us while He talked with us upon

The road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

And they acknowledged their true feelings while

Their hearts were opened to the Word of God

And to the Lamb of God who did expound

Them to their minds and hearts, now they could see

Both in their minds and eyes just who it was

Who for their souls did undergo the pain

And suffering of the past three days hence.

With hearts on fire and with rapture they went

And to Jerusalem returned to find

The Eleven disciples and those who

Were with them, all assembled together.

The two companions said unto them:

“It is true! The Lord has risen and has

Appeared to Simon. We were on the road

To our small village, Emmaus, when one

Whom we did not recognise walked with us,

For we had asked this man of the events

That happened these past three days hence, for he

Did ask us what we were speaking about

As if he didn’t know of those dreadful

Events and all that had taken place since.

Chided were we for our slowness of heart

To understand the things that had to come

To pass, so that the Christ, having suffered

Would enter into glory in the heavens.

He taught us everything concerning Him

As spoken through the prophets, and our hearts

Became as living fire within and burned

The truth upon them, as Yahweh did burn

On Sinai’s mount two tablets made of stone,

Commandments by which humankind could live

According to His precepts and receive

Fullness of life in pure obedience.

Implored we Him to stay with us and eat

Which he accepted. When He took the bread

And blessed and broke it, giving us a share

It was then that the scales fell from our eyes

And both our hearts and sight did recognise

The Lord, the Christ, the Son of God who came

To save all humankind from sin and death

And restore Eden from the serpent’s grasp.

Blessed be the Lord, the Christ, who did these things

Our hearts are still aflame with love for Him

For by His grace Eden is now restored.”

A holy silence fell within the room

And loving acceptance of testament

As given by the two companions

Who remained there awhile in fellowship

And prayer giving due thanks to Yahweh God.
