This verse was written during a Quiet Day at the Chemin Neuf Community in Storrington, UK, as a workshop exercise. Like the biblical psalms, it has no regular meter and does not rhyme unless it evolves that way in some manner. It is loosely based on Matthew 25: 31 – 46.
The Lord is righteous and just
His righteousness is perpetual,
His justice fair and precise.
The Lord abides in righteous souls
And those who have turned to him
Will never be disappointed.
The Lord blesses souls that are just
They will blossom and never wither
Their fragrance is both gentle and strong.
But woe to those whose righteousness
Is self-centred and which cares not
For the poor, the needy and oppressed.
Woe to those who promote injustice
For selfish gain, at the expense
Of those who are deprived of their lot.
The fate of those who do these things
Will themselves face judgement and wrath,
The righteousness and justice of the Lord shall prevail.
