New Eve

The purity of Eden’s virgin state
Once beautiful, once flourishing now lay
Bestained by act of disobedience
By Satan’s act of lies and villainy
Unto the hapless woman taken from
The flesh of Adam who in turn did take
Of fruit forbidden, questioning not why
It had been picked. Now open were their eyes
To their misdeeds and Satan’s sly forked tongue.
Banished were they from Eden fair, as was
The serpent now cursed, who would suffer from
The enmity of womankind, until
A time would come when sin would meet its end
And purity would be restored at last.
The woman was named Eve, the mother of
All who live, but under the curse of sin
And its dire consequence. What could dispel
Such deprivation of once blessèd state?
What antidote could cure all human souls
And restore beauty to the human state?
Now unto Nazareth let our minds fly
Scorn of Nathaniel, a true Israelite
As was declared by Jesus, Lamb of God.
Let minds be fixed upon a maiden pure
Vessel of grace, Mary Immaculate
Startled by vision of the Archangel
And questioning the message that he spoke.
Now came the realisation that she would
By her acceptance of her destiny,
Would be a second mother, the New Eve
To untangle the sinful human state.
Lady of grace perpetual, to crush
The serpent’s head and force it to consume
The fruit by which it had tricked humankind
And suffer for itself the consequence
Of sin, the due reward of its foul deeds.
Mary, the antidote to the first sin
As caused by Eve, of undiscerning mind.
Yet in this sorry state a grace would come
And has now come, salvation to bestow
Upon us all, from Yahweh’s mighty hand
By incarnation in the virgin’s womb.
By power of the Holy Spirit, sin
Would meet its nemesis, from virgin pure
Unto the sacrifice upon the cross.
The resurrection of the dead will wipe
Away all sin and its effects most dire.
Praise to the Triune God for evermore
