This poem is to do with a sacred space that I created in my back garden. It is very simple, as the photograph shows, and proves one does not have to be elaborate in creating such a space. The idea of creating space like this and writing the following poem was a random one really, and therefore quite unexpected. Unlike a lot of my poetry, this one has rhymes for a change! Now read on…………………………
Between tall shrubbery
A simple open space
That has existed for some time
Spiritual carapace.
Soft earth beneath one's feet
Simple table and chair
Lights hanging from sturdy branches
Simplicity of fare.
From Spring, and through Summer
To Autumn, in warm days,
Are times to be alone with God
To worship and to pray.
Spending time to reflect
Upon one's life and give
To Him, your heartaches, problems, cares,
To turn to Him and live.
And when the night time falls
Still you are in the light
Both outside and inside of you
Armed ready for the fight.
Against the devil's wiles
You have the shield of faith
And all the spiritual armour
Just as the Bible saith.
O simple sacred space
Where present is the Lord
When invited into this place
Jesus, the holy Word.
O Triune God, come down
And come into this space
Fill it with your Presence divine
And bless it with your grace.
So may it holy be
With that Presence divine
May prayers uninterrupted rise
And bear fruit on the vine.
